Travel insurance for your Camino

I carry travel insurance on every Camino, and I've used World Nomads across all six. I hope you never need it. But you're walking hundreds of miles in a foreign country, and things happen: a sprained ankle, a trip to the hospital, a cancelled flight, a stolen phone.

US health insurance often covers little or nothing overseas, and Medicare generally doesn't cover care outside the US. A medical evacuation home can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

When you compare policies, look for:

  • Emergency medical care and medical evacuation

  • Coverage for hiking and walking (some policies exclude "adventure" activities)

  • Trip cancellation and interruption

  • Lost or stolen gear and baggage

  • 24-hour help by phone

Read the fine print. Every policy is different, and it's your call whether you need one.
